Green grass all year round

A Norwegian company is studying how to make grass grow better indoors. The grass is primarily intended for use on the pitches in indoor football arenas.

You see, real grass is much healthier than artificial grass. Not only does natural grass result in fewer injuries, there are actually fewer bacteria in real grass than in the artificial kind.
Coloured light bulbs
Some football arenas already have real grass, but it tends to get ruined quickly. This company gets grass to grow nicely by spreading a blanket of tiny specially coloured light bulbs over the pitch. These light bulbs give off only the colours that the grass needs for photosynthesis. That makes the grass grow especially well. The blanket is kept hovering above the field with the help of fans, and the light is adjusted so the grass will grow very quickly.
Strong evidence
In 2003, scientists discovered a new way of making the light bulbs. Once that was done, they were able to make exactly the kind of light the grass likes best. This is strong evidence to support the idea that new technology leads to new inventions! Scientists will be performing more experiments on the indoor grass in England this year. Next year, however, it might be growing in an arena near you.
